The Dark Child: The Autobiography of an African Boy

The Dark Child details Camara Laye's childhood and adolescence in the village of Koroussa, French Guinea.  Much of the book focuses his childhood education in the 1930s and 1940s, the religious rituals he grew up with, and his decision to leave Guinea after high school to study in France.

Author:
Camara Laye (1928-1980) was born in Guinea under French colonial rule.  His works include The Dark Child (also known as L'Enfant noir) and The Radiance of the King (Le Regard du roi).  After Guinea's independence, he worked for the government and later went into voluntary political exile.
